Miskatonic Institute: MAIL-ORDER MONSTER KIDS AND THE LEGACY OF 40s HORROR

The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies winds up its 6-week course FRAGMENTS OF THE MONSTER: RECOVERING FORTIES HORROR with this class by Kier-La Janisse on children's spectatorship - both onscreen and off - throughout the 1940s. We'll look at the mystery-solving antics of the East End Kids, the Gas House Kids and the various Our Gang spinoffs, and see how the act of 'witnessing' changes and challenges perceptions of authority. We'll also look at how fandom - specifically in the form of the independent mail-order underground - has kept 40s horror on life support even in the face of total neglect by genre critics.

Miskatonic Institute: A GHOST STORY FOR CHRISTMAS: A BRITISH HOLIDAY HORROR TRADITION

To kick off the holiday break, we’ll say farewell to the Fall 2012 semester with a one-off class celebrating the British holiday horror tradition of the BBC’s seminal 'A Ghost Story for Christmas' series that ran from 1971 to 1978.
